Ganesha is the Hindu elephant-headed God. Legends say that, lord Ganesha was created by goddess Parvati, wife of Lord Shiva. She created a statue with the dough that she used for her bath and breathed life into him And this was lord Ganesha. Later while Goddess Parvati was taking her bath Lord Shiva happened to come there and as Ganesha didn't know him, he didn't allow him to enter the house. As a result Lord Shiva got angry and he beheaded Ganesha. But after realizing the real fact lord Shiva fixed the head of an elephant in place of Ganesha's head and thus the appearance of Lord Ganesha with the head of an elephant happened
In India every year the Hindus celebrate the Ganesh Festival for which sculptors make statues of Lord Ganesha using traditional methods , such as making a mould and then filling it with plaster of paris to make the idol , as seen in the pictures.
The Ganesh Festival is celebrated for 10 days.At the end of the 10th day there is a huge procession as seen in the pictures below , after which the idol is immersed in water.
